Dealing with the decline of memory, I created this immersive environment as a visual and almost tangible representation of reminiscence. The back wall (left) is similar to the idea of a web of neurotic thoughts embedded in the back of one’s mind, flaring up at times or simply contemplation passing by. The right wall is the forefront of what we see, what we try to imagine when recollecting; images pile on top of each other, crossing over and fading, leading from one memory to another. Broken images reflecting off the CD sculpture floating along the walls are the fragmented memories that are harder to remember, circling around, and unable to be focused on to recollect. CDs along the wall have burned and written memories on them dating back to 2002. This room is filled with my personal experiences and is a simulation of what goes on in my memory bank. As part of my senior thesis, my exploration of memory and its degradation over time has led me to create multiple works dissecting the possible forms of memory and how others can experience mine in an enveloping environment. For this piece, I decided to focus more on the auditory aspects of memory versus the visual. The soundscape and projection are entirely made up of footage I collected encapsulating my experiences. The audio is clearly distinguishable in comparison to the projection, whereas the projection is purposefully blurred so it’s not the visuals that are recognizable, but the auditory memories. Though made up of collected experiences, the footage I used is comprised of all meaningless moments, small conversations between friends. The hanging sculpture is made up of smashed thrifted glass vases, belonging to memories of strangers. The result of the projection onto the spinning sculpture is the recreate a visual of how I see memories in my own head: a ball of spinning colors and lights – a more intangible yet physical form of my memories with whispers of these experiences surrounding the viewer. It is almost like recycling of no longer needed objects and useless moments.Colors are based on the 1950s melodramas and the exaggerated performance of emotion.

This piece draws from an early childhood memory of mine when my brother and I first began to play computer CD games in the childhood room he was raised in, hence the CD mobile structure. In the corner of his room, he had a peculiarly framed NASA poster that had a sticker that looked exactly like the back of a CD. The way it reflected light and contained a million rainbows was the same as well. The projections are a playthrough of Pokemon Leaf Green, the first handheld game I ever played with him, and the audio is an edited version of Lake Verity from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, my brother and I’s favorite version of the series. The audio is different yet recognizable, similar to a distant memory that seems familiar. This installation’s goal was to capture the small fragments of these early memories in different forms as an encapsulating environment. The video reflections off the CD’s and onto the walls are a more representative visual of my fragmented memories. (This installation is part of my installation/memory studies in light and video reflections off of different materials.)

This installation focuses on natural experiences, decay and growth, as well as cycles that occur in nature, sunrise and sunset. Together, we created a temporary installation that showcases an abstracted form of semi-permanence. The footage was displayed through a small projector, on a slow spinning platform within the canopy, and four speakers were also placed inside to create an immersive sound experience. Our canopy was constructed from sticks, layered with fabrics. The idea was to create a cozy feeling, to mimic the feeling of building a childhood fort. Flowers, leaves and other organic material was draped over the outside. Together these objects are symbolic of temporality, and creates fleeting shadows against the wall when the projector passes by. The slow turn of the projector resembles the circle of semi-permanence, and temporal being of the installation is a reminder of that. In this collaboration, we explore what semi-permanence means to each of us in a naturalistic way, and explore each of our mindsets in how we construct this idea. Our four minute projected video completed one full rotation around the canopy every 45 seconds, while the audio is 3 minutes long. The installation is played on a continuous loop. This interaction between the projection, sound, space, and shadows create an ever changing ephemeral experience for viewers.
